Any chance we could have WebP files on this site?
I'm not super fond of them, but I find a lot of memes in that format that I'd like to post here.

Using simple scripting, you can batch convert entire directories.
However, I would suggest that conversion into the appropriate format (webp can contain PNG or JPG like a true nigger format) could be handled by the site. The thumbnail generation is server-side and could do double the work I think.

/sp/ content and site-wide rules

What are the rules for /sp/?
>inb4 no rules at all
More specifically, what site-wide rules do or do not apply to /sp/? There are obvious answers for rules that should apply sitewide, such as rules #3, #12, and #13, but do the other rules for mlpol.net apply to /sp/ as well? Such as writs against generals, eceleb threads, and blacked spam? Is /sp/ a "random" board in the way that it covers any topics that don't refer to the other boards, or is it a "random" board where the rules of mlpol.nst don't apply?

/sp/ has for the longest time been /mlpol/'s equivalent to /b/, and since it's creation I've grown used to seeing the catalog full of spam and shitposts, mimicking the sportschan board it's named after, as an equipment to /b/. For a while, /sp/ was treated like /trash/, with "shitpost" threads from /mlpol/ being moved there, but that fell out of fashion over time.

As for the mystery of the universe: what is Football?

Why did you bring up the e-celeb thread for? The one with Alex Jones? You said you didn't "take the bait" with it unprompted.

I made the thread with the debate that involved Alex Jones. Maybe he was talking about that.
I guess it breaks rules, but it felt relevant enough to post anyway.
The eceleb general on /sp/ is rulebreaking cancer though, and imo it should be deleted immediately.

That thread is kind of what I was talking about when I referred to sitewide rules not being enforced on /sp/ in the OP. It is both an eceleb thread and a general.

In the interest of transparency, here is a full rundown of how our reporting system currently works:

>is the poster who made the report visible?
Yes. Every report includes the IP, name, address, phone number, vaccination status, approximate geolocation, and waifu of the user making the report. The system automatically ranks every report according to quality of waifu. Reports made by users with shit waifus are ignored.

>do staff only see reports while browsing?
At present yes. However, our engineering department is currently developing the MLPOL paging system. When this system is complete, each staff member will be required to carry a pager on their physical person at all times. Whenever a report is made, the pager will immediately blast the song "Janny Are You Okay" by Michael Jackson at an extremely loud volume. The staff member will then have a maximum of 60 seconds to log in and view the report. Should they fail to do so, the system will automatically forward their browser history to the FBI, along with a complex AI-generated psychological profile of the staff member based on waifu choice.

Eventually, when the technology becomes available, we hope to employ NeuraLink connectivity, allowing all staff to monitor every last bit of autism that gets posted to this site in real time, without the need for complex reporting systems, distractions, hobbies or sleep.

serious answer: reports include the hashed IP of both the person making the report and the poster of the reported thread. Staff can use the hashed IPs to check post histories of both users. As to whether or not bots could potentially abuse the reporting system, I would have to let Pupper field that one because I'm not sure. I do know that we've had human users abuse the report system before. If done frequently enough and with obvious malicious intent, it can lead to bans.

Bump Limits
Anonymous
No.5974
5981 5987 165881
Has anyone else had the feeling like the bump limits on this site are too high? They're much higher than those of other sites like /pol/ and /mlp/. On /mlpol/ threads stay up for years at a time, and I feel like it's broken the spirit of our old "no generals" policy. Maybe it would be healthier for discussion to have lower bump limits and simply have Anons make new threads when old ones hit their limit, to prevent stagnation.
I think they've been extended twice before since the start of this site on request by some Anons who were in certain long-standing threads, but i feel like that might have been detrimental in the long term.

>And How so?
Because the natural lifespan of a thread is part of what distinguishes the conversation format of chansites, from both a meta standpoint and a psychological one.
From a meta standpoint, it ensures that a thread stays on topic with concise discussions, and doesn't devolve into hundreds of separate loosely-related conversations. It also ensures that there is a suitable timeframe for conversations, so users don't necro-reply to posts made weeks ago. This keeps threads on-topic, currently relevant, and ensures that all posters are speaking within a relevant timeframe to have a conversation. This is why threads have bump limits, including slow altchan sites, because having incredibly long threads doesn't lend itself to conversation quality, perhaps even moreso for slowchans. When a single thread lasts thousands of posts, all the conversations blend together, and content is buried in an avalanche of posts (and often cannot be reposted until due to duplicate files). I'm worst case scenarios it starts to read more like an endless subreddit or Facebook feed than a chansite, and that is not what I want this site to be, and I don't think anyone else wants this site to be either.
From a psychological standpoint, the bump limit gives a thread a natural lifespan, which effects poster participation in a number of ways. First and foremost, it means that users have an incentive to post to particular threads while they last, and not in two months. It also means that each thread has a length that means users who backread can confidently remember and reference the conversations in each thread. It goes for both one-off threads and the individual parts of generals. The blending of conversations and the burying of content quashes incentive for posters to participate in a particular thread or produce content, and that contributes to poster hesitancy. It's basically a dilution effect, where the first 300 posts of a 1000 post thread detract from all consecutive posts while themselves not getting any replies because they were made months ago.

Knowing all that, what did we actually gain from these changes? Changes that were made with little prior input. How did raising the bump limits increase the quality or quantity of content on our site? Did threads get better? Are we having more fun than before? I have seen no notable improvements in the past few years that can be attributed to the raising of the bump limits.

>Now consider a forum that has 'no bump limit' they usually don't endlessly continue living for decades. They die when the topic is exhausted or killed.
That's missing the point. It's not about the topics themselves dying off, but the quality of discussion in a single particular thread being diluted over time due to excessively long bump limits, and for those threads experiencing conversation degradation as the thread goes on. If a topic is continued after the lifespan of a thread ends,

Forums with "no bump limit" generally aren't the same as chansites. Discord, reddit, Twitter, and Facebook all lack bump limits, but they're a very different format from us.

And you keep making this argument that having higher bump limits is better for a slow site, but I think the opposite is really true. A slow site can handle shorter bump limits easily, as it would still take a while for threads to fill up. If /mlpol/ switched back to lower bump limits, our most popular threads would still take weeks to fill up, just not months. Is a thread that lasts for weeks really not enough? Why exactly was it necessary to stretch the bump limits this far? Where did that need arise? Who was it that claimed that /mlpol/ was filling up its threads too quickly, when almost all of the posters were from /mlp/ and /pol/?

Another reason why I think raising the bump limits was a mistake is that it partly renders rule 10 ineffective.

Greetings. /qa/ probably isn't the right board to post this on, but I'm at the end of my rope here.

I adopted an imageboard last year after the Admin decided he was done with the internet in general. I've moderated the board since 2016 and it has over 10 years of history. It's a small site, but it means the world to me and a few other guys on the internet who don't have many other places to go.

I am completely unqualified to do the technical duties of an Admin however. The board runs some version of NPFChan which was installed as an upgrade to Vichan. I've tried setting up a local install of either one but the process escapes me. Configuring databases? No idea what that means or even how to go about learning it. I'm not going to say the instructions are vague, because really the whole process of getting a board package online would be trivial to anyone with a hobbyist understanding of system administration. But that's not me, and I have no idea where to even start.

So I ask, can anyone recommend some basic instructional guides, books, videos or whatever, that will give me the knowledge to at least competently migrate the entirety of the site to a new host? The board is falling apart at the seams due to AWS not permitting us to upgrade our disk size (Fuck AWS in general; learning webdev is hard enough without AWS's pajeet approach to hosting), and we're facing waves of gorespam at the hands of some guy with unlimited VPNs. Even our captcha implementation is disfunctional. Why? I don't know, and I don't know how to know.

If there is no hope for my dumb ass to figure things out, are there at least some trustworthy developers anyone here knows who I may be able to pay to look in to things? I'm not asking for new features, I just want the built-in spam protection to function as it should. I've been contacted by others and have sought help before, but every time it ends up being some depressed man in a dress who wants full access to the site so he can nuke it in the name of homosexualism or something.

I want a Trixie plush.

Moving to a new host should be pretty straight forward.

1. Download all files from current host using FTP
2. Export the database using phpMyAdmin
2.1. In phpMyAdmin Click on the database left hand pane
2.2. Click Export in top row mid pane and then the Export button
3. Upload files to new host using FTP
4. Create database (MySQL) on new host (if not already created)
5. Go to the database on new host using phpMyAdmin
6. In phpMyAdmin Click on the database left hand pane
6.1. Click on Import in top row mid pane
6.2. Add the file you Exported in "File to import:" and click Import button
7. Edit the config file in `inc/config.php`
7.2. Go to the " * Database settings" section and fill in correct info for new host database
8. Change the DNS setting for domain
8.1. If using Cloudflare go to Cloudflare and change the IP for the domain to the new host
8.2. If not using Cloudflare go to the domain registrar and change DNS setting to point to new host IP
8.3. The DNS change can take some time if not using Cloudflare unless you have set DNS to be updated every 5 minutes or so in DNS setting

Side-Note: Make sure the new host have all the PHP packages it need - usually it has them by default but just be aware in case NPFChan starts to complain when doing certain operations.
To test prior to switch just wait with changing DNS and visit the new host site using IP or temp-/alternative domain you set up.

When it comes to spam it is hard to combat and you just have to try to set auto ban and such. As an example even Google and YouTube is incapable of fighting spam so it is a complex problem.
Why captcha don't work I'm not sure about. To speculate it could be that NPFChan is using an old version of reCaptcha that Google have retired and no longer support (Google have a long history of abandoning thigs willy-nilly and older stuff). It has been a while since I worked with that code so I don't remember which captcha method it used, so I'm guessing from looking at the config file.

User Policy Rule #8: No Generals
Anonymous
No.6135
6136 6137 6142
In this thread, we discuss the future of the "no generals" rule. Whether that be to remove it, re-confirm it, reform it, or clarify it, or decide how it should be enforced.
The No Generals rule is one of the oldest rules on our site, but it's also the least consistently enforced. Very many exceptions to the rule exist on /mlpol/, both explict and de facto. Some Anons have wondered if the no generals rule might be outdated or obsolete, while others have stated that it should be enforced more consistently; some Anons have called for clarity for what constitutes a "general" and why they should be disallowed on this site.

Share your thoughts:
Do you like the current rule? Are you just indifferent to it? Do you think it should be changed? Do you think it's fine as is? Do you want to see it enforced more consistently? Is the rule helpful to our site? Could it be detrimental? Just what is a general? Are generals a bad thing? Do generals diminish content creation, or promote it? What do you think about the current existing generals? Etc.

Drawfagging is content.
The difference between drawfagging and Boomer memes is the heart behind it is front and center.
Writefags count as well.
User retention and acquisition is based on a few things outside of the site itself.
The state of the world and people.
Basically the world keeps demanding more time and energy.
People have circumstances and needs and changes.

You know what /mlpol/ is a bastion of confident hope, truth and horse pussy.
Sure there is some well founded stuff tracked in from being in the world, but for a while any anon can stand in this place. Finding treasures both new and old.

I have a bunch of scrapers I could use for this. But scraping a website takes time and runs the risk of getting blacklisted by the website. It's also possible to miss something if the scraper isn't configured properly.
A dump would be significantly faster and easier for everyone involved.
